On the 4th and 5th of February, some of the country’s best rally drivers will take to the road for one of the most anticipated events of the rallying calendar. The Galway International Rally is an historical event and one of the better recognised rallying events, running since 1978. It now serves as the opener for the championship, kick-starting the rallying season! Galway presents some of the most challenging circuits and stages for even the most experienced rally drivers. The unique terrain of the Wild Atlantic Way attracts some of the biggest names in rallying, both nationally and internationally. This teamed with the unpredictable weather that a February date can bring means this is a competition not to be missed! The fourteen unforgiving stages set up for the weekend of action will be located within easy driving distance of the Maldron Hotel Oranmore making us the perfect venue for your stay in Galway!
The 2016 saw Garry Jennings achieving a memorable overall victory to beat three times British Rally Champion Keith Cronin into second place by almost 3.5 minutes. This was a much-sought after win for Garry whom had never won the event before despite many years of competing. Last year the conditions were very challenging and saw a lot of the competitors crashing out.
The rally is based in our sister hotel, Clayton Hotel Galway, located in Ballybrit (a mere 10 minute drive from us). The event will run over two days and will have a total of 14 stages. The event is one of the most popular in the Global Group Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and is perfect for spectators.
